The Bastion is an old fort that was built by early settlers (Hudson's Bay Co.) to defend their village. It still stands in the downtown core today, preserved, and has since been transformed into a historical museum.
Newcastle is just a short journey from the Seawalk, close to Harbor Park Shopping Center in downtown Nanaimo. A short passenger-only ferry service serves the Island.
The seawalk stretches across the Port of Nanaimo, from the Nanaimo Yacht Club to Harbor Park Shopping Center. The walk is scenic, beside the ocean and provides access for bicyclists as well as those on roller-blades. The Seawalk extends past the yards of the Civic Arena sports center, by the old foundry building.
A nice little walk around a large marsh. Very quiet and relaxing. Dogs must be kept on leashes. Plenty of birds and other wildlife.
A unique shopping and dining district is situated in the old city of Nanaimo. The rustic shops provide close access as well as a mild adventure of various shops.
